Ⅰ.General introduction of the discipline and the research fields
The Master’s degree program in fine arts of Jiangsu University sets up six research directions for Chinese Painting, Chinese Calligraphy, Visual and Information Design, Environmental and Public Art Design, Industrial Design and Digital Media Design. Cultivating a professional characteristics is the mainstay of Art School, Hence the pivot of creativity and artistic inner qualities are taken into account as innovation and creativity are the bench mark of the department. The teaching achievement emphasizes on creative practice and aims at cultivating a high-level of applied special talents in the field of art creation. With central laboratories and workshops, professional literature rooms and experimental facilities, college of Art have a comprehensive laid solid material foundation to enhance postgraduate education to the international standards.
Ⅱ. Goal and objectives
The purpose is to train elites with art design practice skills on a high level of artistic design practice, the strong ability to express, analyze and solve problems. Those elites can continue to pay attention to the developmental trends at the forefront of the discipline at home and abroad. They can meet the needs of social, economic and cultural development. They can become a high-level application of specialized personnel who are capable of design units, institutions, research and government departments such as art and art design practice, management, teaching, art design activities planning and organization.
Ⅲ. Study duration and the way to cultivate
1. The basic way of master graduate training is the tutor-responsible system. After postgraduate students enroll in school, students should finish the bidirectional mutual selection to choose the mentor. Under the guidance of the instructor, graduates should complete the research topics, the system to explore, which can combine classroom teaching and social research practice, theoretical research and personality creation.
2. Curriculum provision should be oriented by practical application, aimed at occupational demand and centered by comprehensive quality, application of knowledge and ability to improve. The course set is divided into four major modules: degree public courses, major compulsory courses, professional elective courses and professional practice. The training process highlights the professional characteristics and focuses on practical education. Postgraduates during school time should be under the guidance of an assigned instructor to have a planned purpose to participate in social practice activities and to actively grasp the opportunity of artistic practice. Our college has cooperative exchange platform with some foreign universities and a joint training mechanism has been established. Part of eligible students can be selected to participate in exchange learning projects, and get the appropriate proof of the exchange of learning communication.
3. The graduate students for art major are required to accomplish at least 27 course credits which should be earned from the courses taken and the credits for degree courses should be more than 15. The completion of 27 credits-courses are usually within one year, while the additional 1.5 to 2 years are used to complete the dissertation research and oral examination in thesis defense.
4. Study duration is at least 2 years (including 2 years),not more than5 years.

V. Credits requirement for the practice (≥ 28 credits)
Graduate students must participate in the academic activities and compulsory links during the same credit system, collectively referred to as practice credits. Practice credits and courses credits are not common. Graduate student credits and practical credits are required to meet the requirements before they can enter the degree thesis to reply to the dissertation defense link.
(1)Academic activities (≥2 credits)
Graduate students must participate in "academic ethics lectures", domestic and foreign well-known experts and scholars of the lectures, academic reports, graduate forums and other academic research activities organized by the university. A complete academic report should be formed after participating in academic research activities. Postgraduates during the school time should hand in more than 10 academic reports. Academic activities are subjected to examination by subject or mentor.
At the same time, in order to broaden the academic perspective of graduate students, the university encourages graduate students to participate in international conferences or national high-level academic conferences in the school, read academic papers and exchange speeches at the conference. Graduate students in international conferences or national high-level academic conference who qualify with their academic papers are added as part of their academic activities, the specific requirements determined by the discipline.
(2)Literature reading (≥2 credits)
Graduate students should complete the classics reading which the instructor designates. The professional literature reading should not be less than 60,000 words, with a certain ability to study academic literature and self-access to knowledge. Literature reading should be accessed and recorded into grades by the subject group of experts before the opening of the dissertation. Failures cannot enter the opening part of the degree thesis.
(3)Seminar (1 credit / time)
Graduate students in the academic period must be open within the scope of literature exchange, academic research progress reports and seminars. Graduate students shall not be less than 1 time with the purpose of promoting graduate research interdisciplinary.
(4)Practice links (≥23 credits)
① Postgraduates must carry out practicing skills (6 credits) for at least 3 months. (2 credits);
② Postgraduates should participate in the exhibition practice links for at least 2 times such as design competition activities or design projects, summing up the results of practical activities and the exhibition organized by the organization;
③ Postgraduates should participate in art tours for more than three times (3 credits), including the museum inspection , folk art survey, art and design exhibition observation, the study report submission;
④ The artist's practice under the guidance of professional direction (6 credits). Postgraduates should carry out independent original artistic creation or management planning activities under the direction of the professional direction instructor and publish the creation exhibition of the corresponding works in the third semester. The results of the artistic practice are quantified, and the quantity and size requirements are shown in Table 1.
⑤ Graduation design practice link (6 credits). Master of Fine Arts Degree Applicants are required to carry out independent original works of art or management planning activities for graduation design, not less than 6 months. A graduation design exhibition should be held in the fourth semester and creative details and requirements can be referred to the "No.7, The display requirements of Graduation professional ability".

Note: The participation in various design competitions and exhibitions during the reading period is encouraged and the corresponding credits can be achieved. National and above exhibitions (National Association of Fine Arts, Federation of literary and art circles, Ministry of Culture jointly or separately) (6 credits) (6 credits), Provincial exhibitions (jointly organized by the Provincial Arts Association, Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Cultural Unions) (3 credits) and municipal exhibitions (Prefecture-level city Associations of Art, the Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the Department of Culture jointly or separately) (1 credits). The credits can be replaced with credits for "practice sessions".
Ⅵ. Advisory committee and supervisory
The master postgraduate students should be directed by a qualified major supervisor (Ph.D. graduate faculty), as well as a committee panel containing several qualified co-advisors/committee members. The Advisory Committee initially consists of at least 4 members of the Graduate Faculty, including the Major Advisor, who acts as the chair. At least 2 members must be from the School of Art, with at least 1 of these being a full member of the Graduate Faculty. The remaining 2 members may be from School of Management or another college, with 1 being a full member of the Graduate Faculty. If the student declares a minor, 1 committee member must be from the minor department. The committee should be established by the end of the second semester of the student’s graduate career.
VII. Dissertation
(1)The opening of the dissertation
The opening of the dissertation is the primary link in the process of postgraduate training. Before writing the thesis, postgraduates must search for a great quantity of literature, especially the foreign literature and study the history and current situation of the main research direction. The report should discuss the key issues such as the basis of the thesis, research program, expected target and scientific research, work plan and so on.
Postgraduate dissertation tries the collective opening by the discipline (College) unified organization and must be approved by the mentor’s consent of the examination before proceeding. Each subject should set up a degree thesis expert assessment team (mentor and steering group members must avoid), composed of 5 experts related to the subject or disciplines to determine a person in charge of the opening of the examination work. (Degree) system, the subject (College) should announce the degree of time, place and other specific information online in advance. Each postgraduate has at least two opportunities of the opening and the duration of the thesis, and the interval between the two openings should not be less than three months. When a postgraduate fails two opportunities they are dropped.
The examination of the opening of dissertation should be for one year (or at least 11 months) before the application to submit a dissertation.
(2)Published academic papers and obtained scientific research
Postgraduates should actively write academic papers and obtain certain scientific research achievements during their studies. For details, please refer to the relevant requirements of the Jiangsu University on the Academic Articles of Academic Degrees and the Academic Degrees of Academic Degrees.
(3)Writing thesis
The dissertation must be completed independently by the postgraduate under the guidance of the instructor. The format of the thesis is described in the format of writing the postgraduate degree thesis of Jiangsu University. The dissertation should conform to the academic norms, standards and methods of academic consensus, prevent plagiarism and all misconduct. The text should be clear, structured and concise. The number of dissertation is not less than 40,000 words (English words, excluding charts).
(4)Review and defense
The requirements of the review and defense of the dissertation can see the Jiangsu University Degree Grant Work Implementation Details and Jiangsu University Graduate Degree Thesis Blind Trial Interim Measures and other related requirements. In addition, the defense experts must include a relevant expert.
Ⅷ. Practice process and requirement
Graduate students are required to participate in the professional teaching practice, including the guidance of undergraduate experiment, marking the lab reports and homework to complete at least 60-70 hours of work. The practice process will be reviewed by the teachers in charge of teaching. The graduate students are also required to attend related seminars and expert forum, and if possible, to participate in social investigation and research or technology promotion. IX. Other issues and requirements
Graduate students are required to initiate their thesis study projects prior to the end of the second semester. The medium-term examination for thesis study is scheduled in the fourth semester. Other following important schedules relevant to your graduate study could be found from the Overseas Education College (OEC) at Jiangsu University. In general, a Master’s student is required to have a research proposal and a plan of study accepted by his or her Graduate Advisory Committee by the end of the second semester of study. A list of completed courses and those proposed to meet school requirements should also be prepared. A meeting of the Advisory Committee should be convened by the student to discuss his/her proposal and course work.
Every graduate student is required to publish at least one research paper in a relevant domestic or international journals, or to make a speech at an international academic conference (submit relevant certificates) prior to being eligible to apply a dissertation defense. The thesis must demonstrate a mastery of research techniques, ability to perform original and independent research, and skill in formulating conclusions that enlarge upon or modify accepted ideas.
The above achievements are required to be with the first unit of Jiangsu University.
X. Requirements of graduation professional ability display
(1)The overall requirements
The specific contents of the professional ability display are: the program of independent original works of art or management plan submitted by the applicant for the master's degree.
(2)Specific requirements
Chinese Painting graduation creation should provide 8 to 10 pieces and 15 selected works;
Calligraphy Graduation creation should provide 15 calligraphy or seal original works;
Visual and Information Design graduation creation should hand in a series of works of original design (more than 8) according to the topic to determine the overall creative ideas;
Environment and Public Art Design graduation creation should hand in a series of works of original design (more than 8) according to the topic to determine the overall creative ideas;
Industrial Design graduation creation should provide 3 sets (each set of is not less than 3) of original works program according to the topic;
Digital Media Design graduation creation should provide 1 to 3 sets (each set of not less than 2) of original works program according to the topic.
