The 2025 Red Dot Awards ceremony recently kicked off in Singapore. A collaborative design project titled "Pelican Patch" by Lin Wenxiang, Xiang Tiechen, and Lü Xing (all master's students from our institute) and Wu Jinghao from Dongguan University of Technology stood out among global competition entries, securing the prestigious Red Dot Award: Design Concept — Best of the Best. As the highest honor in the Red Dot Awards category, this achievement marks our university's historic breakthrough in this international design competition. The team's maiden victory in the top-tier award represents a milestone in advancing our design education and cultivating innovative talent.
The Red Dot Design Award, often hailed as the 'Oscar of industrial design,' ranks alongside the iF Design Award and IDEA Award as one of the world's three most prestigious design accolades. The Red Dot Infinity Award, however, is reserved exclusively for the most exceptional concepts and works in specific design fields, representing the pinnacle of design excellence and visionary thinking in those domains. With an exceptionally low global winning rate, it holds unparalleled authority and influence within the industry.
The award-winning project "Pelican Patch" tackles wildlife conservation by creating an innovative artificial laryngeal prosthesis for injured pelicans. This groundbreaking design demonstrates exceptional systematic and creative approaches in structural engineering, biological behavior adaptation, and new material applications. It not only showcases the design team's profound understanding of biological morphology and functionality but also highlights the efficient integration of advanced materials in life-saving medical scenarios.
